Reflexology Lymph Drainage was researched and developed by Sally Kay BSc (Hons). Sally worked in hospital and hospice settings delivering reflexology mainly to breast cancer patients, unfortunately some patients went on to suffer secondary lymphoedema after having a lymph node removed causing swollen arm/s. Sally orginally developed RLD to assist patients in the management of this condition. Many case studies have been undertaken proving the effectiveness of RLD for lymphoedema suffers as well for people who suffer from chronic conditions. These case studies showed a range of benefits from reduction in swelling of the limbs that caused discomfort, helping in pain reduction, an increase in mobility and energy levels while helping with fatigue, which is a major symptom of cancer and chronic illnesses. All these positive benefits have showed to give back the individuals confidence and aiding their wellbeing.
This innovative approach has gained national & international awards and there are further plans to do more research.
RLD is unlike manual lymphatic drainage because you do not need to remove any clothes as RLD is worked on the feet. A measurement can be taken of the affective limb/s to record any reduction in volume overtime if this is the clients wish.

Lymphatic System is a network of glands and channels throughout the body that removes excess fluid. The immune systems part helps fight infections and protects the body from diseases. Lymph is a fluid containing infection fighting white blood cells called lymphocytes, lymph collects some toxins and waste from the body tissues throughout the body. It is a secondary circulation system that effectively drains excess interstitial fluid from tissues, transports fats and vitamins and then returns the fluid back into the blood stream, the cardiovascular system. If this fluid is not returned to the bloodstream then the tissues would become waterlogged making the blood volume fall. Therefore is it very important our lymphatic system is in balance to stay healthy.

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition where tissue swelling occurs restricting proper lymph drainage, it happens when your tissues retain fluid that have been left behind after the cardiovascular system sends bloods to the tissues and organs. Lymphoedema can effect any part of the body but mainly develops in the arms or legs, this is called Secondary Lymphoedema. It can also develop after surgery, injury, infection or after having a limb removed, suffering breast cancer then having a lymph node removed. Primary Lymphoedema is caused by hereditary genes that effect the development of the lymphatic system which usually starts at infancy or early years. In addition to helping lymphoedema patients, research has proven RLD can help aid many Chronic Conditions where there is pain and inflammation.
There is no cure for lymphoedema at present, but by using techniques to minimise fluid build up by stimulating the flow of fluid through the lymphatic system and providing circulation is a good way of maintaining and supporting the body.
